I aim to show the viewer everyday
objects exploring their mundane, but fundamental existence in our world.
I cannot underestimate the importance of a simple form, not only for its
shape, but also for it's presence of place. For example a button can be
so tenderly thought of - I paint these everyday objects to protect their
beauty and existence. Atmosphere is also an important element in a
painting and is essential for a painting to work. I am often asked if I plan what I am going to paint. The simple answer is that an artist has to research a composition and subject matter, as much as a writer might research for a poem. Most recently, I have been influenced by Matisse, and Vuillard's French interior paintings. The palettes of English painters like William Scott and the Scottish Colourists have also inspired my use of colour. I share Morandi's view that objects are like architecture. Shape has a power and an important existence of its own. Like Morandi, I am drawn to repetition. It is the slight change in repetition that interests me, whether it is different, or whether it is our view of it that makes the difference. |
